For-All Bible Center, Inc. BLOG Topics Is the Bible we have today really reliable?: Posted 4/29/2010 7:58:03 PM Probably the best teacher I have ever met is Stephen McCollum. He is a history teacher and I once heard him say that he became the teacher he is today because of questions that were asked by his students. We also get asked great questions in our Bible store. A young (20 years old) girl named Alicia asked me today can we really believe the Bible we have today or did it get all jumbled up in the last 20 centuries. Now that is a great question! Now permit me to ask another question. If we were to suddenly lose the original copy of the Declaration of Independence penned by Thomas Jefferson, what would we do? How would we know for certain what it said? After all, it was written in the late seventeen hundreds and it is now about 234 years later. The answer is, we have reliable copies, and when those copies are compared, they match. In addition, it is an important, life changing, well studied and well known document, and we can easily reconstruct it by reading what others have written about it. Did you know that there are almost 25,000 manuscripts of the New Testament? They are remarkably (one might even say miraculously) accurate when compared one against another. Even though we have no original copies of any of the New Testament authors, we have complete copies dating to within about 250 or 300 years of the original writings. In addition, these were important, life changing, well studied and well known documents, and we can easily reconstruct nearly the entire New Testament by reading what the early Church fathers have written about it. We accept this system of cross checking with other historical documents, therefore why not with Biblical manuscripts? Come in and check out our many resources which can help in your own personal study in regard to this and other great questions.
